Mollymook Lifeguard Herman Unsworth has designed a safety pack that will save lives.
The SOLAS, recently just out of the box after research completed by professional lifeguards and PAQUA Australia last month, is a small safety system that hangs off a belt or arm and is capable of withstanding all the elements faced by rock fishers including being swept into the sea.
The PaquaComms SOLAS has strobe light, an LED flashlight with a power of 10 lumens (that works concurrently with the flashing strobe) and a waterproof pouch for either a mobile  phone or a walkie-talkie radio and a pealess whistle that works for raising the alarm and locating rock fishers in the water for would-be rescuers.
Mr Unsworth said “that the SOLAS has also a strip of reflective SOLAS tape so very useful for searchers like those at Catherine Hill Bay conducting searches in the night - the reflective SOLAS tape can bounce the nearest flash of a search beam back to the rescuers.”
Mr Unsworth said that “it is time rock fisher’s, no matter of their experience and knowledge of particular favourite areas, should like small boaters do with a check-in and check-home radio system, take some responsibility and always go fishing with a SOLAS  system”
